Citra®, developed in the USA by John I. Haas, is a highly versatile hop celebrated for its unparalleled citrus character. Although it was bred by Gene Probasco in the 1990s, it wasn’t released to the public until 2008. Today, it stands as one of the most iconic and influential hop varieties—pivotal in shaping the success of pale ales, IPAs, and NEIPAs. Citra® forms the vibrant foundation and standout feature of countless fruit-forward beers.
While hop flavour can vary slightly from crop to crop, As the name suggests, Citra® is all about The Citrus, and is consistently prized for its intense citrus and fruity profile, with fruits like lime and grapefruit as well as other fruity characteristics such as gooseberry, passion fruit & lychee coming to the fore as well.
Breeding background: 50% Hallertau, 25% US Tettnang.
