Description
Wakatu™ is a New Zealand hop variety developed by the New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research and originally released in 1988 as Hallertau Aroma, before being renamed in 2011. Wakatu™'s lineage is two-thirds Hallertauer Mittelfrüher, and it combines classic noble characteristics with vibrant New World citrus notes.
This well-rounded, dual-purpose hop is known for its strong, fresh citrus aroma alongside moderate bittering potential. Its enviable alpha-to-beta ratio and balanced oil profile make it a highly versatile performer, consistently delivering from kettle to finished beer.
Wakatu™ offers excellent flavour and aroma stability, whether packaged in small formats or served on tap. It shines across a wide range of brewing applications and styles—standing out particularly when used in multiple, high-rate additions for bold ales, or in subtle doses to balance the sweetness of full-bodied malt lagers.
