Description
Southern Cross™ is a New Zealand hop variety developed through HortResearch’s breeding program by crossing Smooth Cone with a 1950s American–Fuggle hybrid. It was officially released in 1994.When used as an early addition Southern Cross™ imparts a soft, clean bitterness with a subtle resinous character, making it ideal for smooth bittering. As a later addition, Southern Cross™ truly shines, delivering bright lemon zest and fresh pine needle aromas that add vibrancy and complexity to the beer.
This mid-season maturing hop is known for its vigorous early growth and produces long, cylindrical cones up to 5 cm in length. It also offers a good yield. Like all New Zealand hop varieties, Southern Cross is naturally disease free, making it a reliable and distinctive choice for brewers looking to add a balanced citrus-spice character to their beers.
